BRONZE & SRC PROFICIENCY INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION
This year we are required to run in-depth proficiencies for all awards. Below is the information for all BRONZE AND SRC award holders. Please ensure to read all and follow all information so your time and our time is not wasted.
Please endeavour to attend one of the below dates for your proficiency. With all awards requiring in-depth it is very hard to get through all members and awards, we appreciate your cooperation with this.
In order to register which you MUST do, please follow the below points:
- Login to your members portal via SLS NSW
- Click on E Learning
- Select ‘Training Event’ on the left hand side
- Look for the preferred date in calendar and select event
- Click on ENROL and follow the instructions.
- NOTE – You will be sent an email check your junk/spam folder. It will provide links to 10 videos (timing between 30 sec to 1min). These will also be on your events page once enrolled. Please watch to help us get through everything as quickly as possible.
Current Proficiency Dates for BRONZE AND SRC award holders:
- Saturday 27th August
- Saturday 3rd September
- Sunday 18th September
Sessions times and details for above date as follows:
- 8am till 1015am (estimated times may run over)
- 1030am till 1245pm (estimated times may run over)
Station 1 – CPR and Radios with 3 trainers (3 areas 3 trainers) 45 minutes with 12 candidates.
Station 2 – Run Swim Run, Signals & Board Rescue (1 trainer) 45 minutes with 12 candidates
Station 3 – SPINAL UPGRADE (2 trainers) 45 minutes with 12 candidates
Candidates: 12 per station (72 per day)

FURTHER INFORMATION
SLSNSW have deemed that for the 2022/23 season that there will be an in-depth skills maintenance requirement for all Surf Life Saving Awards following the past two seasons that have seen abbreviated requirements.
The in-depth skills maintenance requirements for the relevant awards are outlined below:
STATION ONE WILL INCLUDE:
Resuscitation (CPR)
- A primary assessment (DRSABCD) on a live victim including the demonstration of the lateral position.
- Primary assessment (DRSABCD), CPR 1 and 2 people (adult or child AND infant) on an approved manikin – to include resuscitation methods using a resuscitation mask or face shield and AED.
- Team CPR scenario including primary assessment (DRSABCD) – to include resuscitation methods using a resuscitation mask or face shield and AED.
Radios
Radio Participation in a scenario involving equipment. The scenario must include at least three of the following situations and must be conducted for each candidate:
- Pre-operation checks
- Knowledge of local operating channels and uses
- Inter-patrol communications
- Rescue procedures, requests for assistance which include the four P’s.
STATION TWO WILL INCLUDE:
Run-Swim-Run (timed)
- SRC— 100 m Run-100 m Swim-100 m Run in 5 minutes or less
- BM— 200 m Run-200 m Swim-200 m Run in 8 minutes or less
The run distance to be taken from waist deep water, e.g., the run is from a flag, around a marker and to waist deep water. The aquatic components are from waist deep water around two swimming buoys and back to waist deep water, Swim leg must be around two swimming buoys. Reasonable adjustment may be made for surf conditions on the day.
Signals
The demonstration must include the following:
- Beach to water signals
- Water to beach signals
- Tower and other signals e.g. Mass Rescue, Emergency Evacuation Alarm, etc.Rescue
Rescue
Demonstrate a minimum of one rescue of a victim. SLSA strongly encourages that this is of an unconscious victim, using a rescue board and according to SLSA operating procedures in the current SLSA Public Safety and Aquatic Rescue training manual. The rescue must include the following:
- Negotiating the surf zone
- Securing the victim
- Returning to shore with the victim
- Calling for assistance
STATION THREE WILL INCLUDE:
Spinal Management UP SKILL Training
At the end of this session you will:
- Understand common causes and classifications of spinal injuries
- know how to respond to and manage victims with a suspected spinal cord injury on land and in an aquatic environment.
