SURF SPORTS

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last weekend saw the first of the NSW State Championships take place with the Champion Lifesaver event held at Freshwater SLSC. Congratulations to Blake Lovely who won Gold in the Opens and Melanie Thomas and Robin Barham who both placed 4th in their Masters age groups. Huge thanks to our trainer Chris Curulli, for all his hard work coaching the team this season.

This weekend it is the Nippers turn competing on Thursday 23rd – Sunday 26th February, they will be followed by the Masters on the Wednesday and Thursday before the Opens kick off on Friday 4th March and conclude on Sunday 6th March.

Manly will be well represented across all age groups, so if you are looking for something to do why not pop down and support ‘Team Manly’. For full details please visit the SLSNSW website https://www.surflifesaving.com.au/event/2023-nsw-surf-life-saving-championships/

After 2 days of competition so far the nippers are sitting in 9th place. The 9’s and 10’s have now concluded their competition and we had some great results. Some of our medallists were:

2nd – U9’s Board Relay – Felix Greig, Joseva Ranatawake, Will Chalmers
2nd – U11 2*500m Beach Relay – Lily-Ana Swane, Elodie Bankes
2nd – U10 Swim Team – Alice Woolnough, Freya Van Rijswijk, Millie Gaudry, Indi Eames
3rd Millie Gaudry  U10 surf race
3rd U10’s Mixed beach relay – Alice Woolnough, Mikaila Semmens, Jules Huisman, Beau Riches

To keep up with the results as they happen, they will be using the live heats platform and the results will be able to be seen here https://liveheats.com/slsnsw

PALM BEACH MASTERS

On Saturday a small group of the Manly LSC Masters went and competed at Palm Beach. We had awesome conditions and had so much fun!!!! Still to this day we have absolutely have no clue at how they work out the results especially given Manly green teams practically one all the races and yet the winners of the green team were actual people in the black team??? Fortunately for Manly our black team members- Tony Gilbert Jo Carmichael and Thomas Crawford pulled out the overall win in the blacks. It was a fun morning.

An article about the event can be found here Pittwater Online News

GENERAL USE CLUB BOARDS

  • Racks 1-12 are general use club boards for all proficient and financial members.
  • Make sure not to drag the boards, and wash them free of sand including rinsing the handles after use.
  • Please advise board captain John Thomson 0411 822 060 of any board damage that requires a repair.
  • The boards have been super popular, especially the 6 x brand new Bennett’s.

Please paddle out and enjoy them – you deserve it!

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT

It has been great to meet club members at the start of patrols to outline the new role of Club Chaplain. Manly LSC joins over 60 lifesaving clubs around Australia with a Chaplain, including Queenscliff, Freshwater and Bondi.  For those who haven’t met me yet, I’ve been a club member for 3 years with Patrol 6.  My background is in corporate health and wellness with more recent training as a Sports Chaplain. This is a non-denominational role providing pastoral care and support and extending the clubs duty of care to members and families.

I met recently with Trish Newton (previous Dee Why Surf Club President); she currently oversees the SLSA’s Northern Beaches TIPS program. TIPS stands for Traumatic Incident Peer Support. Being a volunteer surf life saver, at some stage you may be involved in a critical incident. Each weekend, TIPS has a roster of trained professionals to provide support for distress symptoms that may occur immediately after, or in the weeks following a traumatic incident.  If you need support for a beach related or any other issues, please contact me at chaplain@manlylsc.com or 0418 251 373 so we can provide the care you may need.  Thanks Ken Buckley
