Australian young gun Murray Stewart has capped off a successful 2008 season after winning the open single ski at RESCUE 2008, the World Championship for surf life saving that was held in Germany.

Stewart, who was selected as part of the Australian Senior Flatwater Team in 2008, finished ahead of a quality field of Australian and international competitors from across the globe.

Fellow Australian flatwater paddler and 2006 winner Nick Crilly of Northcliff was 2nd whilst Hank McGregor of South Africa finished third. McGregor is a first class Ocean paddler and has previously won Junior and Senior Marathon World Championships.

The NSWIS paddler put behind him a horrendous 12 months of serious illness and injury, including two broken vertebrae.

In the U23 Bochum regatta Stewart won Australia’s first ever gold medal at this level and led the team to a great tally of 12 medals.

Stewart will now return to Australia for a well deserved break and can target selection on the 2009 Senior Flatwater Team.
